Born in the year 1933, 3rd November, in Tha Thon, Moulmein Division, Myanmar. Among the nine offsprings of Tan Hoke Won and Nang Kyin Thone, all nine males, I am the second eldest son, named as Thein Hlaing @ Edward Thomson Hoke Won and at present known as Doctor Thein Hlaing Naga
During the pre war time I was in St. Joseph Convent of Moulmein as a boarding student. After the end of 2nd world war (1.6.1946) I was in St. Patrick Roman Catholic school of Moulmein attending the school from 3rd standard till I was matriculated in the year 1952.
. Having got through the 2 years of intermediate A & B with science and biology, I was among the students eligible to attend medical college of Yangon.
. While I as a medical college student I become the founder of Thee Thant Association in 1957 and took the duty of Secretary General of Medical College Students' Union.
. As the secretary general of Medical College Student Union I was granted to go to the Republic of China in 1958 to study the life of communist country by the then Prime Minister U Nu.
. In short, leaving all the other students activities which I have carried out for the students, I became a medical graduate in the year 1960, March.
. While attending the intern course for one year, I was the Secretary General of All Young Doctors Association of Myanmar. This association was also organized by me.
. I was very keen to become a surgeon and tried my best as a student to learn and know the human anatomy, keeping Grey's anatomy as my bible. Unfortunately without any prior intention I become strike leader of house surgeons in 1960 while attending house surgeon course ( intern course ).
. Having attained the demand of strike i.e. to award 205 kyats to every house surgeon during internship as an aid, I was badly treated for holding and carrying out the strike. I was removed from internship and thus I joined the Union of Burma Shipping Agent as a ship surgeon.
. While on board, I become lonely and came to know that I will be nothing without a patient to cure. As the old saying, if you are going with the books only, you will be a lonely sailor, sailing in a small canoe in an enchanted sea. Thus, on Feb 8 1962, I left the ship and joined the service as Civil Assistant surgeon. But again I was very badly tortured by the then director of hospital Dr. Po Saw, who did not accept me into service because I had went on strike in 1960. Anyhow, the commissioner of public service accepted my application and posted me as AS of Mergui hospital.
. Since then the door is opened for me to become a surgeon. To fulfill my wish I wanted to know what a surgeon is.
. By going through many books written by many learned surgeons I came across the statement, "if you want to see a surgeon go to bazaar," I followed the advice of this surgeon, but could not catch the point. After many visits I came to learn that there are really many cutting, chopping, peeling surgeons selling beef, meat, pork, chicken using their sharp edged knife.
. Then searching for the real life of a surgeon I came to know what a surgeon is. The surgeon is the one who professionally holds his knife in order to reveal what is not seen or known removing tissue for biopsy to amend what is wrong, to repair what is disfigured, to remove a part or whole of the internal organs of a patient that what is pathologically damaged, to prolong his or her life, to remove a part or whole of the extremities in order to prolong his or her own life. Oh ! what a great job I became to realized. Again I come to know that the surgeon must have the 4 essence. That is
. 1. heart of a lion
. 2. mouth of an angel
. 3. hands of a lady
. 4. eyes of an eagle
. Knowing what a surgeon is and its job, I put my heart and soul and with missionary zeal and spirit keeping the matter of to teach, to preach and to heal I start trying my best to become a surgeon.
. In 1963, I was transferred back to Yangon General Hospital and was taken to anaesthetic department by chief anaesthetist Dr. Charry. In a few months time I was promoted to become ward incharge of new emergency ward 3+4 of YGH.
. There I was allow to perform all the emergency cases of Yangon which was admitted as emergency case. Thus, with the help of my 7 house surgeons I become the emergency surgeon for 9 months.
. During that period of 9 months I become an able emergency surgeon without any consultation and help from the surgeon. It is proved that the patients are the ones that make me an able surgeon. Without patients you will be nothing else.
. Since then I come to realize that it is important to be with the patient to learn, to know how and to be talented. Thus I always stay in the hospital spending all my time with the patient through out my career.
. In 1964 April 11th, I was again promoted as chief assistant surgeon to Professor Dr. Ba Than of Mandalay General Hospital and Rector of medical college Mandalay.
. With 7 house surgeons under me I have to take care of East surgical unit. There all the elected surgical cases was to perform by me. Thus I become well and good for elected and emergency surgical cases of upper Myanmar.
. As an able surgeon I had the chance of operating 10 goitre cases in Mandalay.
. In 1964, I was badly punished and send to Naga land as punishment with 2 years service cancelled and one increment stopped.
. Being innocent I never borthered for any accusation and try my level best for aim and desire to become a surgeon.
. The Nagas never depends for their ailments for modern medicine and they depend on their NAT worshiping treatment. I.e. spiritual healing.
. Thus I become helpless and lonely without any patient in the hospital even for minor ailments.
. While in that remote area with one trained nurse, one ward servant and a clerk and a night watch man.
. In Naga land, endemicity of goiter is high but since there is no complication of goiter no one wish to undergo operation. But for cosmetic reason and pressure symptoms a few wish to undergo operational removal.
. For removal, their demand is they wish to remove under local. I.e they want to be conscious and walk back to their village immediately also they want me to come to this uphill villages and operate them.
. I actually do not know how to give local for such major operation and unless I fulfill their demand, otherwise I won't have the chance to operate. At last I wrote and requested
Dr. D.N.Biswas and Dr. Aung Tun, anaesthetist of Mandalay General Hospital to direct or share a knowledge how to give local anaesthesia.
. With their briefing and directives I try to practice local nerve block for thyroid operation. At last, I become a local surgeon or ambulatory surgeon in that region. Since then using local nerve block ambulatory surgeon was practiced by me.
. Many cases of tumors, goitres, hernias operated under local from 1965 - 1971 in Naga Land and promoted as Sr. TMO.
. In 1971 April, I was transferred to Phyu, Pegu Division where endemicity of goiter is high again. Ambulatory surgery was continued and many cases of goitres were operated
In 1978 I was again transferred and promoted as DYAD Hospital of Bassein Division. Being a surgeon I went round to Pyin Kha Yaing, Nga Pu Daw, Ah Phauk, Ye Kyi, Ah Thoke, Kyaung Gone, Nga Thang Kyaung, Kyone Pyaw, Hin Thada and operate many cases of goiters and other tumors as a mobile surgeon.
. In 1978 December 22nd, I was transferred again to the Namkham Hospital in Northern Shan State where there are many goiters for the region is highly endemic. Thus many cases of goiters and other tumors came for surgery.
. In 1984, I was again transferred to Myanmar Railway as Divisional Medical Officer upper Myanmar. Ambulatory surgery was practiced again in Mandalay.
. In 1988, I was again transferred to Tharrawady hospital as TMO. Here again ambulatory surgery was practiced.
. In 1988 April, I resigned from service and open a personal clinic at Pyin Oo Lwin until now.
. While with my clinic, I was invited to Kanbawza private clinic in Thaung Gyi as a surgeon.
. Again after 4 months at Thaung Gyi I was again invited to Aung Yadana clinic of Yangon as a surgeon.
. Having completed 6 months in Yangon I was again invited to Seikthathukha clinic for 1 year as a surgeon and there after I resumed by duty in my clinic.
. Thus 1965 - 2006, I acted as ambulatory surgeon.
